Student Leadership

Philosophy of Leadership
Leadership is about listening and responding.
Leadership is service.
Leadership requires patience and empathy.
Leadership is about setting goals for the present and future.
Leadership is a privilege, not a right.
Leadership requires self discipline before disciplining others.
A leader never asks someone else to do something that they wouldn't do themselves.
If a leader desires respect from others, they must give respect first.
Leaders make decisions that benefit everyone in the community, not just themselves and their own self-interests.
If a leader can inspire others through their actions and words, then they are doing a great job.
Leaders need help sometimes, and will ask for it when needed. They do not act alone.
Expectations for Student Leadership
The following expectations are required of ALL students involved in student leadership, regardless of the position:
- Students in student leadership are expected to be role models for the other students within the band program by attending all band events including, but not limited to, fundraising events, rehearsals, performances, and activities involving the program.
- Students in student leadership are put in their individual positions to help the program succeed in their efforts and goals. It is expected that each student in their individual student leadership goals will perform their duties to the best of their ability.
- Students in student leadership are expected to work together in their sections and as a leadership team in order to create an effective learning community within the music program.
Student Leadership Positions
Drum Major
The Drum Major is responsible for conducting and leading the band in marching performance. This position is also responsible for communicating, organizing, and leading the Student Leaders to help progress the program to new heights and goals.
Woodwind & Brass Captain
The Woodwind and Brass Captains are responsible for the larger sections of Woodwinds or Brass. Their role requires sectionals for multiple sections and oversees the individual sections ensuring quality across the band.
Percussion Captain
Percussion Captain is responsible for the percussion section and maintaining success with both our battery drumline and pit keyboard instruments. Their role requires sectionals for multiple sections and oversees the individual sections ensuring quality across the band.
Color Guard Captain
Color Guard Captain(s) are responsible for leading rehearsals for color guard and ensuring proper technique in dance and equipment. They are responsible for ensuring quality for their section and leading sectionals, rehearsals, and performance opportunities in the fall and the spring.
Section Leader
Section Leaders are responsible for helping their individual section succeed. This role also has responsibilities of creating an effective learning environment for the section while also building micro-communities within the greater band community.
Librarian
The librarian is responsible for creating copies of music and distributing the material in a timely manner. This also includes staying on top of changing pep tunes, show music, and other concert repertoire.
Uniform Manager
The Uniform Manager position is dedicated to the upkeep and maintenance of the uniforms. This includes cleaning and repairing the uniforms regularly and making sure that all parts of the uniform are properly stored in storage in the off-season.
Social Secretary
The Social Secretary is responsible for creating multiple options for contacting members of the program through social media. This position is also responsible for assisting the staff to coordinate fundraising, performances, and other program related events.
